Cane &Bamboo Products under ASOMI® Brand developed by Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission.

            Cane and bamboo are the two most commonly-used materials in daily life in Assam. Products ranging from household implements to construction of dwelling houses to weaving accessories to musical instruments are made in bamboo. No mechanical devices are used in the craft, which is mainly a household industry. Even SHG women can also think of earning decent livelihoods by making beautiful handicraft items by simply using the bamboos of their backyard garden. The craft traditionally provides part-time employment to cultivators in the lean season, although, increasingly, full-time artisans engaged in commercial activity can be found now. Abundance of raw materials for this craft is also an important reason for the same.

            Cane and Bamboo has a deep rooted history in the land of Assam. Cane was cultivated in the state and was used for various purposes. Evidence said that King Bhaskar Varman of early Kamrupa   dynasty has sent several artifacts of cane and bamboo along with Hien Tsang, the Moroccan traveler who has paid a visit to Ancient Kamrupa dynasty. The famous boom Harshacharita of eminent Sanskrit writer Banabhattta gives evidence for the production of cane articles in the province of Assam.

            Various qualities like suppleness, durability, abundance, tone and resilience and of course the quick maturity of bamboo have made it a very popular choice for making cane furniture. Therefore the cane industry has found a high place among the handicrafts of Assam. Both full and part time employment is provided by the state government where skilled artisan produce decorative baskets, furniture and mats on a commercial basis. More than 500 SHG members across Assam are dedicatedly involved in the bamboo craft making industry of Assam.

            Various products developed under the Cane and Bamboo in Assam is Bamboo Sofa Sets, Laundry Baskets, Tray, Cups, Different Hair Accessories, and Different Household Products.

            Cane and Bamboo Products developed by several SHGs under ASRLM has visited various fairs and earned good revenue as well as reputation for the state.
