SARAS fair is a distinctive initiative of Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India, to market rural products thereby providing an opportunity for income generation to the rural artisans. The scheme named as Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) fair is conducted across the country with the objective of creating awareness about the rural products among the urban population and to develop new business opportunities for the rural artisans/ SHGs. The Ministry is providing financial assistance for organising SARAS Fair annually. SARAS fairs are being organized all over the country to showcase the products made by rural SHGs/artisans under one stage. The participation from almost all states is ensured in the Regional SARAS Fairs.
Regional SARAS 2015-16
The Regional SARAS 2015-16 fair in Assam was organized jointly by Rural Development and Assam State Rural Livelihood Misssion Society. The fair was organised at Srimanata Shankaradeva Kalakshetra, Panjabari, Guwahati. Initially, the fair was scheduled from 30th January to 8th February, 2016 which was later extended till 16th February, 2016 to coincide with the 12th South Asian Games.The Fair has attracted city shoppers due to sale of exquisite handicraft and handlooms products made by Self Help groups all over the country along with a colourful culture programme every evening. The Fair was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Assam on 30th January 2016. 150 stalls showcased products from 20 states. The products ranged from Apparel & accessories (garments, fancy jewellery, bags, umbrella, chappals), Handicrafts, Herbal products (herbal medicines, oils) Food products, Chemicals (soaps & detergents) & others (kitchen tools, nursery, pottery etc).
